For the Béchamel Sauce:
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Additional Ingredients:
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Method:

  1. Prepare the Meat Sauce:
    • In a large skillet or saucepan, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage over medium-high heat, breaking it into small pieces with a spatula. Drain any excess fat.
    • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until they are soft and fragrant.
    • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Add sugar, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
    • Simmer the sauce for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Béchamel Sauce:
    • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes to create a roux.
    • Gradually add the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens, usually about 5-7 minutes.
    • Season the béchamel sauce with ground nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Remove it from the heat.
  3. Cook the Lasagna Noodles:
    • Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until they are al dente. Drain and set them aside.
  4. Assemble the Lasagna:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.
    • Place a layer of cooked lasagna noodles on top of the sauce.
    • Spread 1/3 of the remaining meat sauce over the noodles, followed by 1/3 of the béchamel sauce. Sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the sauces.
    • Repeat the layering process two more times, finishing with a final layer of noodles, meat sauce, and béchamel sauce. Sprinkle extra cheese on top.
  5. Bake:
    • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25-30 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbling.
